Classic BattleTech
Classic BattleTech is a game centered around combat between giant humanoid shaped fighting machines known as BattleMechs, or just as Mechs for short. As well as mechs the rules also allow for other units such as infantry and tanks. This game's universe has been used as the basis for numerous computer games and a large number of novels.
BattleTech started life back in about 1984 and was originally known as Battledroids. The 2nd edition of the rules was renamed as BattleTech. The core game mechanics have remained largely unchanged since then. The rules have continued to be developed primarily to add new weapons and equipment.
Since FASA, the orginal publishers, sold the rights to WizKids there have been two distinct BattleTech games. The orginal BattleTech rules are now in the hands of Fantasy Productions (FanPro) who continue to develop and market them. This versions is sold as Classic Battletech. WizKids themselves market a new and radically different game under the name of MechWarrior that targets a different audience.
BattleTech has a number of features that help it to be a popular game, first and foremost its great fun to play. Another advantage for club play is that as a typical force might only have 4 mechs per side you don't need to transport vast numbers of figure to and from the club and spend ages setting up.
